Meanwhile, Cursor had quietly become the daily workspace for software engineers everywhere. The company grew from zero to $2 billion in annual recurring revenue in three years — the fastest B2B scaling on record — with over a million paying customers and 70% of the Fortune 1,000 in its customer base.

What SpaceX saw wasn't just a revenue line. It was the daily workflow of the world's most valuable professional class, and the proprietary data trail that comes with it.

Why $60 Billion for a Shrinking Share

Here is the uncomfortable detail that complicates the headline. Cursor's market share had actually declined from 41% in June 2025 to about 26% in May, according to spending data from Ramp — and Anthropic now controls half of that category.

So SpaceX is paying a record sum for a tool that is losing ground. The logic holds only if you read Cursor not as a product but as an infrastructure layer. The coding workflows, enterprise usage patterns, and model-interaction data that Cursor has generated at scale are near-impossible to replicate from scratch. SpaceX is buying the one thing Grok cannot replicate quickly: a product layer that developers already trust inside their daily workflow.

The Compute Bargain Hidden in the Deal

The deal also resolves a constraint Cursor had been vocal about. Cursor was already training its Composer 2.5 models on xAI's Colossus supercluster in Memphis, using more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs across 300 megawatts of capacity. Cursor needed compute; SpaceX needed distribution and data. The acquisition formalises what was already a symbiotic arrangement.

Microsoft examined a potential acquisition of Cursor but declined to submit a formal bid. OpenAI approached Anysphere's leadership twice and was rebuffed both times, moving on to acquire Windsurf for a reported $3 billion. That SpaceX ultimately landed the deal — and at double the price competitors were willing to consider — signals how central the coding-AI battleground has become.

What Indian Professionals Should Watch

For Indian software engineers and tech leaders, the stakes are immediate. A SpaceX-owned Cursor will almost certainly prioritise Grok as its default AI model over time, reshaping which underlying models power developer workflows globally. Enterprises currently using Cursor — including a significant portion of the Fortune 1,000 — will face decisions about whether to follow Musk's integrated stack or migrate to rivals.
